The San is one of the oldest cultures in the world, but today they have to fight to survive.
The photographer behind picture no 30, San men in the Kalahari Desert, is National Geographic Staff Photographer Chris Johns. Through his pictures he documents the life of the San people; women, children and elderly gathering food, men hunting with poisonous arrows, and San men and women now living in dismal military camps.
There is a slender hope for a brighter future for the San people. A few San tribes have settled land claim disputes, others are increasingly involved in tourism projects.
