Rare pictures of walrus underwater taken by National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen

Back to overview

The photographer Paul Nicklen grew up on Baffin Island, Nunavut, in northern Canada, where one of his three contributions to 100 Places is taken: picture no 72 of walrus in Nunavut.

Paul Nicklen and his family was one of the few non-Inuit families living in a small settlement of 140 Inuit. The Inuit taught him to read the weather and how to survive in the Arctic, and his upbringing is the cornerstone of his succeeding carrier as a nature photographer.
